HBM raises the standard in torque measurement technology

25 September 2013

HBM: The integrated, magnetic rotational speed measuring system sets the standards for rugged construction, accuracy and reliability. A reference signal raises the level of the integrated system still further. This allows rotational speed and positional controls to be implemented in test benches.

Humidity, condensation, dust, oil and grease restrict the range of application of optical measurement systems. The integrated, magnetic measurement system for the HBM T40 family has been specifically designed to overcome these restrictions and is ideal for extreme applications.

Low measuring ranges up to 50 N•m are available for a variety of applications (in the T40B measurement flange), as well as maximum range options up to 80 kN•m (in the T40FM measurement flange). The output pulse count over all the ranges is 1024 pulses per revolution. So depending on the evaluation method (e.g. pulse quadrupling), it may even be possible to implement a resolution of up to 12 bits in the downstream electronics. The reference signal (0 index) is generated by a separate magnetic field, including a sensor. The integrated system can thus provide the signals to integrate the rotational speed and angle of rotation in the control loop of a downstream control. Two electrically 90° phase shifted square-wave signals are available at the stator as an output signal, to detect the direction of rotation.

Because the radial or axial distance between the sensor and the magnetic ring is up to 2.5 mm, the rotational speed measuring system has a high tolerance of application-related vibrations. This allows full use to be made of the maximum rotational speed specified for the transducer, in conjunction with the rotational speed measuring system.
