New RWC displacement sensor works reliably and accurately in harsh environments

The new RWC series of inductive LVDT displacement sensors from MEGATRON in a slim Ø 20.6 mm design measure precisely, contactlessly and wear-free. Thanks to the robust cable connection with IP68 protection, the sensors are also suitable for use underwater and at operating pressures of up to 30 bar.

The RWC displacement transducer offers measuring ranges from 25 mm to 400 mm and linearity up to 0.1%. It can be used in ambient temperatures from -40°C to +100°C and operating pressures up to 30 bar (special versions up to 200°C/210 bar). RWC displacement sensors operate on the induction principle: the movement of the push rod within the coils encapsulated in the sensor housing generates an electrical output signal analogue to the displacement. As the push rod is mechanically separated from the coils, there is no wear on the sensor.

MEGATRON offers the robust displacement sensor (Ø 20.6 mm) in three different versions: They are used to accurately determine mounting positions, measure deformation or inspect workpieces. The version with guided push rod and PTFE bearing can be screwed together at the ends with ball joints, which ensure optimum alignment of the RWC to the measurement object. The version with an internal return spring allows the RWC to be used as a 'probe' to measure the distance to an object without a fixed mechanical coupling. The built-in spring returns the push rod to its original position when the target moves away. The loose rod version is attached directly to the object to be measured, e.g. to a piston or a fixture. If it is ensured that the plunger can move exactly in the coils of the LVDT without tilting, this variant provides the most accurate displacement measurement.

The RWC series of inductive displacement sensors are housed in a robust stainless-steel enclosure. Their design makes them ideal for use in harsh environments and underwater. An external amplifier, such as the IMA2 LVDT, connected by a long cable away from the transducer, supplies the transducer with the AC power it needs to operate. At the same time, a measuring system is obtained which provides the standard analogue output signals (e.g. 0..10 V, 4..20 mA).

The sensor detects the position of actuators, for example, but can also be used to monitor the position or gap of structures such as bridges or railway tracks. Other applications include agricultural machinery and production facilities and any area where splash water may occur. In order to provide the best possible solution for each application, MEGATRON offers customized adaptations of the cable or mechanical attachments (cable length and assembly with plug or push rod).
