The New BPS 8 Barcode Positioning System

The New BPS 8 Barcode Positioning System

19 June 2009

The new BPS 8 position measuring system from Leuze electronic enables positioning with millimetre accuracy at distances of up to 10,000 m in a very simple manner. Used together with the MA 8 connector unit, the system makes possible economical solutions in industrial environments.

Optical measurement techniques are especially well suited for position determination of rail-mounted industrial trucks, suspension tracks, crane systems, high-bay storage devices or similar automatically moved systems. They function without mechanical wear and slippage.

With the barcode positioning systems (BPS) from Leuze electronic, positions can also be precisely determined along horizontal and vertical paths. By means of a visible red light laser, the measuring unit of the BPS reads the position relative to the barcode tape. The code that is read in the scanning area of the laser beam is used to calculate the position from code information and code position with millimetre accuracy.

A large scanning distance can compensate for mechanical tolerances. Complementing the already proven BPS 34/37, Leuze has developed a new, economical and function-optimised model. In its basic configuration, the new BPS 8 devices transmit the calculated position values to the primary control via an RS 232 interface. For use in industrial environments, such as with telpher lines in the automobile industry or at their suppliers, a connector unit (MA 8) can perform level adjustment for the supply voltage, as well as for the switching input and switching output. Furthermore, an RS 485 interface is then available. Enclosed in a small, robust metal housing, the new BPS 8 devices comply with protection class IP 67. The devices are easy to install and facilitate precise positioning at distances of up to 10,000 metres.
