Heimann Sensor introduces new thermopile infrared sensors of the HMS series with integrated lens

02 March 2011

Heimann Sensor is manufacturing thermopile sensors in TO packages for many years. The HMS series features several chip sizes in combination with various optical filters in housing size “TO46” or even smaller.

Since the packages are small and the filter windows are in close distance to the sensor chip these sensors normally have a large field of view. But for some applications, like for example a forehead thermometer, it would be of advantage to have a small and well defined field of view. Heimann Sensor solved this problem by replacing the filter window with a diffractive silicon lens. These silicon lenses are manufactured on wafer level by Heimann Sensor and can be coated with different infrared LWP coatings. The cap design had to be adjusted so that the cap height matches the focal length of the lens. Again different chip types can be combined with lenses with different coatings.

Six new types with different signal level and field of view from 12° to 18° (50% value) are now available. A long wave pass filter with either 5.5 µm cut-on or 8 µm cut-on can be chosen in accordance with the application. The new sensor types HMS M11 L3.0F8.0, HMS M1c1 L3.0F5.5 and HMS M21 L3.0 F5.5 have been optimized for applications where a small sensor size, a small and well defined field of view and a high signal to noise ratio are needed.

Since the infrared lenses are manufactured in a batch process the new sensor types with integrated lens can be offered at attractive prices in high volumes. The new thermopile sensors with integrated lens are especially suited for infrared forehead thermometers and for remote temperature measurements in the field of HVAC.

In a next step we will additionally integrate a signal amplification - ASIC into the TO46 size package.

About Heimann Sensor

Heimann Sensor is a manufacturer of infrared sensors and modules. In recent years several innovative new sensor types, like the smallest sensor in TO package, sensors and modules in SMD packages or the world first fully monolithic thermopile arrays have been developed and brought into mass production. Main application areas are remote temperature measurement (medical, industrial or consumer) and NDIR gas detection.
