New ultrasonic fork sensor for label detection

New ultrasonic fork sensor for label detection

22 May 2014

SNT Sensortechnik AG: Label sensors are used to detect the precise position of the label on the carrier material in the automatic labeling process. Basically, the leading edge of the label needs to be detected. This ensures that the label is then placed in the right spot. The process is carried out at high speed and the gaps between the labels are short. The ultrasonic technology with the SONARANGE transducers from SNT Sensortechnik AG is far superior to optical or capacitive sensors when it comes to transparent labeling material. In addition to the label detection, the UPF-L is suitable e.g. for edge or weld seam detection or the detection of small holes or perforations as well.

The new UPF-L ultrasonic sensor detects very thin and transparent film labels despite its large fork width, which gives enough room for thicker, folded labels. A simple operating menu in the built-in display allows the intuitive setting of the sensor functions without a manual. The sensor has two separate switching outputs which can be individually programmed. Therefore it can not only be used for label positioning but also for the detection of a web tear. The outputs can be used as PNP or NPN and can be programmed as normally open or normally closed.
