Measurement Technology in the Construction Industry

02 November 2026

A simple, all-in-one solution guides you through every single step of concrete production or the analysis of existing structures and damage: the flexible ALMEMO® system. Sensors collect the measurement data, intelligent connectors transmit it to a data logger, and everything is then analyzed using software.

Monitoring in Concrete Production

Pile foundations are often required to support the load-bearing capacity of heavy structures. To evaluate the soil conditions, test piles are used, to which a large force is applied hydraulically (monitored by force and pressure transducers). Using the data on deformation and settlement behavior collected by the ALMEMO® 710 data logger, it is determined whether the subsoil is suitable for pile foundations.

When pouring fresh concrete, the correct temperature is crucial for achieving a uniform and compressive-strength result. Continuous temperature monitoring during the curing of various structural components in bridge construction can be accomplished using thermowire sensors and the ALMEMO® 2690-8A data logger housed in a waterproof outdoor case.

In some cases, the concrete is treated after it has cured – for example, by applying a coating. Moisture measurement is particularly important during this step, as moisture trapped within the material can lead to discoloration, mold, or even flaking of the coating.

Analysis of existing structures and damage

For projects that have already been completed, a structural analysis may be necessary – for example, for bridges that are starting to show their age. Displacement transducers can be used to measure cracks in the material or joint movements as vehicles pass over the bridge. Surface temperature sensors record temperature fluctuations over time. The ALMEMO® 104 data logger records all data, and a wireless connection between the bridge and a measurement vehicle ensures a high degree of flexibility.

Sensors for relative humidity and temperature, as well as heat flux plates installed on the interior and exterior of a building, provide meaningful data for comparing different insulation and heating methods.

To investigate the causes of damage, it is best to use a non-contact – and therefore non-destructive – testing method. Deformations in concrete caused by mechanical stress, structural design errors, temperature changes, or water loss can be analyzed using displacement transducers as well as humidity and temperature sensors.

For each of the situations mentioned – and countless others – Ahlborn offers a suitable solution with the ALMEMO® system. From simple measurement tasks requiring just one device, a connector, and a sensor, to extensive networked systems with software-based data analysis.
