Methane gas monitoring at the new Health Institute Istria, Croatia

Laboratories of Microbiology Department equipped with CH4 gas alarm system from MSR-Electronic.

The Health Institute Istria in Pula, Croatia, is setting new standards in technology and safety. With the new extension to the existing building, the laboratory and microbiology area has been expanded and equipped with modern research and examination technology.

Microbiological tests in the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology require daily work with Bunsen or Teclub burners, which in turn are operated via methane gas (natural gas).

Permanent work with methane gas needs strict gas monitoring in precisely those rooms where people and equipment must be protected from hazardous gases. In addition, according to the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV) and the Laboratory Directive, relevant safety measures are required when handling various hazardous substances in laboratories and medical facilities.

Fixed gas warning systems from MSR-Electronic are particularly flexible in use here, as they can be tailored to all requirements, whether individual sensors with connection to existing BMS systems or complex stand-alone gas warning systems for large-scale laboratories with different areas. The gas detection system from MSR-Electronic includes freely configurable alarm thresholds for compliance with MAC values as well as various interfaces (Modbus, BACnet, analog output) for connection to existing BMS. By means of a modular design, the system is adapted to your requirements.

The exchangeable sensor system with digitalised measured value processing, temperature compensation and self-monitoring for continuous monitoring of the ambient air is employed in the Health Institute Istria.

The digital gas sensors (type SC2) are used to detect CH4. The exchangeable sensor system consists of the components sensor board with housing (type SB2) and sensor head (type SC2). The sensor head has an independent μController that evaluates and stores all relevant measured values and data of the sensor element. The sensor head transfers this data to the sensor board via the internal local bus. Up to 3 sensor heads for different gases can be connected to the sensor board. The sensor head can be mounted directly on the basic sensor board (type SB2) or in a distance on a remote sensor board (RB2). Via the RS-485 fieldbus interface, the basic sensor board communicates with the GC-06 Gas-Controller - the heart of the fixed gas detection system.

In the event of a gas leakage in the Istria Health Institute, the 1st alarm threshold (20 % LEL) switches the gas supply off via the solenoid valve and warns the staff using a light signal. If the gas concentration reaches the 2nd alarm threshold (40 % LEL), an acoustic alarm is switched on via a horn and flashing light combination to initiate the evacuation of the staff as well as to forward the alarm to the emergency services (fire brigade).

Further information on MSR products can be found here in the current MSR-Electronic online catalog or in the webshop: www.msr-24.com

The complete installation of the CH4 gas alarm system was carried out directly on site by the certified MSR partner Aurel d.o.o from Zagreb.

MSR-Electronic is a manufacturer of fixed gas warning systems with decades of experience in the field of building automation and gas measurement technology. The international company with headquarters in Germany has a wide range of methods for the detection of toxic and combustible gases. On this basis MSR-Electronic develops individual gas sensors, controllers and warning devices for many applications, such as parking garages, tunnels, petrochemical industry or shipping. The products meet more than the general standards and regulations and can therefore guarantee the safety of the plant. www.msr-electronic.de
