Fiber Optic Temperature Solutions for Drying Processes

Fiber Optic Temperature Solutions for Drying Processes

13 October 2011

OPTOcon AG: The drying process of wood, paper, books, and herbs can be controlled via fiber optic temperature sensors. This method offers precise and direct temperature measurement, controlled drying, and nondestructive recovery. Optocon’s temperature sensors are the only way to control and monitor temperatures under RFI.

The fiber optic thermometer FOTEMPMK-19" is ideal for process monitoring. FOTEMPMK-19” is a flexible multi-channel signal conditioner suitable for applications that require a simultaneous readout of the channels at high speed. It is a user-friendly, easy to operate and compact signal conditioner for fiber optical temperature measurement in high electromagnetic interfered environment, in microwave fields and other environments, where measurement with electric temperature sensors is not possible.

FOTEMPMK-19”, Multi-channel 19-inch signal conditioner comes in a 19-inch industrial rack chassis that can easily integrate 1-255 channels. The measuring device features a LCD display with LED backlight per channel and comes with standard analog output and RS-232 communication port for real-time data acquisition. It can be controlled directly using the included “FOTEMP-Assistant” software. The system scans all channels simultaneously. Each channel has its own analog output and can be controlled independently via the RS-232 communications port.

The outer jacket of the fiber optic temperature sensors is made out of Teflon, at the sensor tip a GaAscrystal (gallium arsenide) is attached. The probe sensor is completely non-conductive. Optocon’s fiber optic sensors offer complete immunity to RF and microwave radiation with high temperature operating capability, intrinsic safety, and non-invasive use. The probes are also designed to withstand harsh and corrosive environments.

Starting at a light wave length of 850 nm GaAs becomes optical translucent. Since the position of the band gap is temperature dependent, it shifts about 0.4nm/Kelvin. The measurement device contains a light source and a device for the spectral detection of the band gap. This guaranties fast, repeatable and reproducible measurements.

Via the analog outputs and thanks to its accompanying software “FOTEMP-Assistant”, measurement results can be easily controlled and monitored.
