On tour with the world´s most powerful diesel locomotive:

HeavyDuty encoders in a compact design

Baumer: Encoders that have to endure hostile ambient conditions must fulfill demanding industry-specific requirements when deployed in mobile transport systems, rail technology or container cranes. To mention only a few: Especially protected electronics and mechanical design, resistance against shocks, vibrations and extreme humidity and last but not least they have to ensure dependable operation over a wide temperature range.

The Baumer Product Segment Motion Control pools in-depth expertise and offers an extensive variety of encoder configurations specifically conceived for harsh environments. A typical example is the incremental encoder series FOG 9 with service-proven reliability, evidenced at the world’s most powerful four-axle hydraulic diesel locomotive. The MaK 2000-4 BB by Vossloh with 2700 kW even masters a 2.8% acclivity with a tractive force of 745 t. A really impressive performance - and the result of an optimised wheel spin-slide control system that detects the wheel slide at the friction limit. The required speed feedback is provided by a Baumer HeavyDuty incremental encoder with B10 EURO flange that is attached right away to the unsuspended axle.

The compact design, the solid aluminium housing and the dual bearings at the stainless steel shaft provide ultra-high protection against shocks and vibrations and endure ambient temperatures ranging from -30 to +100 °C. An armoured hose protects the customer-configured cable against stone chipping. The HeavyDuty encoder provides up to 2500 ppr and utilizes a shock and vibration- proof sensing method by Opto-ASICs with brightness-controlled LEDs. High-voltage power transistors ensure dependable and noise-immune longrange transmission of the square signals.
