PiezoMike Linear Actuator for High-Resolution and Stable Positioning

PiezoMike Linear Actuator for High-Resolution and Stable Positioning

26 May 2014

The new N-470 linear actuator from PI (Physik Instrumente) simplifies the automated adjustment of mechanical and optomechanical components. This actuator can be subsequently integrated into conventional mirror holders or positioning stages for precisely aligning the beam path of optical assemblies. It features a travel range from 7.5 mm to 26 mm and is also available as vacuum version to 10-6 hPa and 10-9 hPa. It comes with a mounting thread or a shaft for integration into the existing application environment.

The N-470 has a high motion resolution of typically 20 nm and can, in consequence, align optical components with utmost precision.

Simply Stable
The PiezoMike linear actuator keeps a position with long-term stability and is vibration-proof and shock-resistant. It provides a holding force of >100 N and a feed force of 22 N. Even after long downtimes, it assures reliable start-up, being the ideal choice for "set-and-forget" applications.

The N-470 achieves its high holding force and resolution by combining a piezomotor with mechanical thread translation. When at rest, the drive is self-locking and requires no current.

The piezo-based drives are very compact, the N-470 being currently the smallest linear actuator of its performance range.

Simple to Operate
The E-870 drive electronics from PI is especially tuned to the requirements of PiezoMike linear actuators. One amplifier can serially control a unit with up to four channels, this keeps investments costs low as a positive side-effect.

PI in Brief
Well-known for the high quality of its products, PI (Physik Instrumente) has been one of the leading players in the global market for precision positioning technology for many years. PI has been developing and manufacturing standard and OEM products with piezo or motor drives for 40 years now. With four sites in Germany and ten sales and service offices abroad, the PI Group is represented internationally.
