Measuring roll diameter with ultrasonic sensor

Measuring roll diameter with ultrasonic sensor

14 November 2011

SNT Sensortechnik AG: Ultrasonic sensors with analogue output (0..10V or 4...20mA) measure the distance to objects of different size and texture. The measuring ranges vary from few centimeters to several meters. The measurement is performed by means of time of flight measurement of ultrasonic echoes. The ultrasound frequency determines significantly the maximum possible resolution accuracy. It is typically about 0.1...0.2% of full scale measuring range. I.e. at some 1/10mm up to few mm.

If an ultrasonic sensor is directed radially to the surface of a material roll or cylinder, one can indirectly measure the roll diameter. The shorter the distance to the sensor, the greater is the current diameter of the roll. Although the accuracy is limited as described above, the detection with ultrasound is - in contrast to optical sensors - almost independent of the material und thus more reliable.

Depending on the roll diameter, analogue sensors from SNT Sensortechnik AG of the series UPS (small distances), UPR (middle distances) or UPK (long distances) are used.

SNT Sensortechnik AG is a specialist in ultrasonic sensors for more than 20 years.
