Magnetic Actuators for General Purpose

Magnetic Actuators for General Purpose

15 April 2010

Tyco Electronics: Actuators have a major function in today’s modern passenger cars. Keeping safety features in place or releasing them at critical situations, locking or unlocking doors, changing the damping mode of the vibration silencers of the engine, just to name a few. All of these cannot be realized without an actuator.

As each specific application defines its own packaging layout, the Tyco Electronics’ expertise helps to design the function into the form. Our engineers make carefully prepared simulations and studies in order to optimize the energy efficiency in the available packaging, considering the required output forces, ambient temperatures, and displacement parameters. The actuators delivered by Tyco Electronics focus on linear displacement, both for mono- and bi-stable solutions.

Highly accurate magnetic properties and reliable performance are provided with orthocyclic winding processes, integration of magnetic conductive materials, and precision thermoplastic overmolding. The multispring technology simplifies the assembly steps for electronic assembly where a PCB might be required.

Tyco Electronic’s expert product knowledge in magnetic and winding technology is the base their innovative solutions into the following automotive application areas:

  • Active shock-absorber switch-mode actuator. The actuator is integrated in the front shock absorber of the car, and makes the reaction on impact of the bumper stiff or flexible, depending on the driving speed. Pedestrians and bicycles are exposed to less severe injuries by this system.
  • Variable camshaft actuator. In high temperature environments the sealed actuator proportionally controls the camshaft angle depending on the engine load and speed.
  • Regenerative braking systems rely on the Tyco Electronics’ actuator coils to fall back on a hydraulic system if required.
  • Engine air suspension damper mode is changed between idle speed and normal load by means of a Tyco Electronics’ actuator for minimum vibrations and maximum comfort to the driver and passengers.

Information about Tyco Electronics – Automotive Sensors:
