CoMo Injection with MultiFlow Balances Hot-Runner Molds on Basis of Cavity Pressure

19 September 2009

Kistler: The curve of cavity pressure during injection molding is the critical process variable for evaluating part quality. It is also the most informative controlled variable for balancing hot-runner systems. The CoMo Injection process monitoring system Type 2869B…from Kistler with the optional integrated MultiFlow function now combines comprehensive process monitoring and automatic hot-runner balancing in a single tool.

Cycle by cycle, CoMo Injection with MultiFlow measures the pressure in each cavity of a hot-runner mold – from injection, through compression and holding pressure, to cooling phase. In the injection and holding pressure phase the MultiFlow software function analyzes the curves of the pressures in all cavities. With a view to identical filling and hence a synchronous rise in pressures in all cavities, it automatically calculates new setpoint temperatures for each hot-runner tip as manipulated varia-ble. The system automatically transfers the calculated setpoints via an interface to the hot-runner controller. The mold is automatically balanced during process start-up, and continuous optimization always keeps it stable during production. The balanced mold therefore always exhibits congruent cavity pressure curves in the injection and holding pressure phase. At the same time, CoMo Injec-tion continuously monitors the quality of all of the parts produced and signals any need for automatic separation of rejects.

Hot-runner balancing with MultiFlow completely eliminates the need for manual optimization of the hot runner on the basis of filling studies. It also obviates time-consuming optimization and manual adjustment of the hot-runner temperatures before and during production.
