SAE Convergence 2012 most recent venue for Melexis new and innovative automotive ICs

18 November 2012

Novi, Michigan, USA October 26, 2012 – The bi-annual, dedicated automotive electronics show hosted by SAE was the recent venue for Melexis to present its recently introduced ICs and demonstrate advanced technology applications. Melexis exhibited on the show floor its recently launched MLX90620 Infrared Array Sensor, targeting advanced HVAC controls for in-car climate controls and occupant detection and classification.

The continued growth in automotive electronics means this show represents a primary site for automotive systems design engineers to learn about the latest technology trends. Melexis chose to preview its vision of technology trends at an invitation-only event also held at Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI. Advance versions of sensors and ICs were shown as system demo’s using the Melexis ATV (Advanced Technology Vehicle. This demonstrator was based on a commercial All Terrain Vehicle modified by Melexis Applications Engineers. It included 3 main system demos; LIN RGB, IR Array and NFC access control.

The LIN RGB LED demo consisted of Melexis newest LIN slave IC, MLX81106. This world’s first fully integrated device allows efficient and cost effective implementation for driving RGB LED’s directly from the LIN bus. Ambient interior light control represents a desirable personalization option associated with luxury cars. The LIN RGB LED IC can enable luxury lighting features in mid-range and entry level automobiles.

The MLX90620 IR Array demonstrator tracked hand movement via IR thermal maps of the driver or passenger’s hand reaching for the touch screen controller on the dash. Other applications for this device include climate control systems, occupant detection and classification.

Near Field Communication (NFC) was shown through the MLX90132 IC used as an access control system with an NFC enabled smart phone replacing the door access and ignition key. This rapidly deploying standard for secure transaction processing can allow an NFC smart phone to be an “electronic” wallet. No need to carry credit cards, an NFC phone will eventually allow secure, full digital, retail purchasing. Adding the capability to also replace a car key brings more convenience to the driver.

In addition to the demo’s shown on Melexis Advanced Technology Vehicle a Pressure Sensor Demonstrator allowed visitors to experience the capabilities of the new MLX90809 Packaged MEMS Pressure Sensor IC. This recently introduced MEMS IC was shown in the format of a brake vacuum sensor measuring simulated manifold vacuum pressure. The trend for Stop-Start systems in next generation vehicles will reduce emissions and increase fuel economy. The need for more sensors to support these advances includes a precise, robust and cost effective brake vacuum sensor.

Melexis invited guests experienced at Convergence 2012 the newest technologies with first hand support of product experts and real live hands on demo’s. The impact of the SAE Convergence 2012 event might not show up in showrooms next year but will undoubtedly create exciting new advances in next generation cars and trucks.
