Balluff STM GmbH: Conventional laser fork sensors achieve their high object resolution only with the aid of apertures in front of the transmitter and receiver which reduce the dimensions of the collimated laser beam. Due to this design, the measuring signal can be lost already with slight mechanical deformations of the enclosure.

With the laser fork light barriers in the GLSK line from STM, the transmitter unit itself emits a laser beam of high precision. It is accurately circular with a diameter of 0.4 mm and its residual divergence is only 2 mrad.

The achievable object resolution therefore results directly from the quality of the laser beam. The receiver can thus be configured as a large-surface photodiode element without a converging lens and its directional behavior.

Any distortion of the unit as a whole, such as can come about from warping when being tightened upon installation or from an asymmetrical temperature deformation, are no longer relevant. Despite high precision in object recognition, the fork remains simultaneously insensitive to such external influences.
