NEW App Note on: Speed & Direction Estimation in Rotating Systems

29 March 2018
*featuring Coto's RedRock RR121 TMR Magnetic Sensor

Coto has published a new multi-page "How-to" Engineering Application Note called "Using RedRock TMR Magnetic Sensors RR121 for Speed and Direction in Rotating Systems." This new app note discusses the use of TMR magnetic sensors in rotating systems where speed and direction of rotation are the bases for measurement. Such applications would include utility metering, motor position and other indexing applications, where the turn of a shaft is directly related to a quantity to be measured. Covered in detail in this 4-page application note are: Sensor Characteristics & Speed Measurement; and Step & Direction Sensing - with plentiful diagrams included to illustrate.   You can find this new app note posted in the RESOURCE LIBRARY on Coto's website.

Excerpt:
"Utility meters (gas, water), motor commutation and distance measurement are among an ever expanding range of applica¬tions which require a measurement of rotation speed and/or direction of rotation. Traditional methods, such as optical meth-ods, are rapidly being replaced with magnetic sensing methods due to the latter's inherent simplicity, ability to operate through barriers, and cost advantages due to better integration. Mag¬netic field sensors using Tunneling Magnetoresistance (TMR) bring additional advantages, such as the ability to operate at a substantially lower operating current while providing greater sensitivity. These enhancements extend the operational life of a battery-operated device, and can reduce the size of the device - both of which directly improve user experience."
